University Library Freiburg

Loud in the north, quiet in the south

How can visitors to a library be shown where talking is permitted and where not? In the library of Freiburg University this task is performed by an expressive system of suspended, three-dimensional signs. A light, italic font indicates quiet areas, a bold, straight typeface loud ones. In this way the signage system attractively underscores the architectural concept of the building, which was divided vertically into two areas in the course of a spectacular renovation that generated a lot of attention. Since then a glass pane has separated the “loud” northerly rooms from the “quiet” ones in the south.
